Wish I'd known about #voginip earlier – I'd have come into town for it. @MicrobiomDigest's liveblogging shows me that it's absolutely my jam.

Who needs to take notes at the #voginip when there is @MicrobiomDigest tweeting updates in such clear and concise ways! Very helpful 😉

KK: Ontology not only deals with categories, but also with how they are connected. In Ikea products, we can link which cushion "goes well with" which sofa.
We can also accommodate synonyms such as "couch" search term instead of "sofa". #voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
KK: Of course, every company will fill up these categories very differently. For Ikea, the shape or size of a pillow is stored as metadata, but the category would be "decorative cushion".
Ontology deals with the structure of these concepts and categories.#voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
KK: The knowledge graph is a new infrastructure combining business concepts with actual data in a connected network-like form. It can be read by computers as well as by humans. It has three layers – 1) concept: product; 2) category: indoor sofa; 3) data: Stockholm sofa#voginip pic.twitter.com/pzJAsEfnPM

JvA: To make these search tools work, we have to work together with people saving the information, tagging it, developing the search systems, and the end users of the taxonomy. #voginip
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
JvA: The 5th problem is suboptimal taxonomy functionalities. Where a search query does not give any results, even if items are correctly tagged.
For example, showing taxonomy filters that will not give any search results. #voginip pic.twitter.com/X9ZUCluvah— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
— KNVI Juridische Informatie (@KNVI_JI) March 16, 2023
JvA: A fourth problem is incorrect tagging.
Humans or software can mislabel information. Or we can tag items with too-general or too-vague terms.
Use tagging guidelines and instructions.#voginip pic.twitter.com/pzC7c65Kw3— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
— KNVI Juridische Informatie (@KNVI_JI) March 16, 2023
JvA: A possible solution is to remove the ROT: Redundant, Obsolete, Trivial content. #voginip
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
JvA: A third problem that can hinder a good taxonomy is bad content. For example, duplicated photos or files. Or too much content/too many topics in an article. Or FAQ pages in pdf form.
Taxonomy cannot solve these problems, but can help discover it. #voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
JvA: A second important point is the quality of the metadata. Think about vague file names ("Document1") – the file name is part of the metadata, but is not informative, so it is not useful for taxonomy. Alternatively, there can to be too many fields to fill in. #voginip pic.twitter.com/xkulaw1gGv
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
JvA: Like organizing silverware, we make decisions on where things belong – "binning".
Another person might have made a different choice and put the blue spoon somewhere else.
What is the best navigation structure?
Multiple labels [poon, plastic, blue] make it easier.#voginip pic.twitter.com/UzlsQSqELe— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023

[EB: For me as a biologist, I am used to a different definition of taxonomy, where there are not only categories, but also a hierarchy/nesting. JvA's description sounds more like database fields than a species-taxonomy]#voginip
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
JvA: What is taxonomy? A set of controlled descriptors to label certain content. E.g. a collection of cans that have labels such as content (peach, pineapple) and cut (small pieces, slices). Good descriptors allow a database to be searched effectively.#voginip pic.twitter.com/XNfsO3hnW0

There is a lively discussion after his talk – how do we deal with monopoly positions of e.g. Twitter and Facebook in determining what we see in terms of political opinions, and with their leaders who have enormous power. #voginip

RP: But such regulations are easy to avoid by big companies, and only make it harder for smaller competitors to do business.
Maybe we should look at those companies as other, even hostile countries, and fight against the growing monopoly of Big Tech companies.#voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
RP: Countries have started to impose regulations and laws on those companies, e.g. about privacy, but the companies can move their business to another country – or even into space (Starlink)!
That makes them more independent from governments. #voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
RP: Souverinity and power are moving from countries and governments to Big Tech companies, e.g. Google, Twitter.
Those companies decide increasingly which information we can find and access.

Interesting key note by Nava Tintarev at @VOGIN_IP about bias in information and people. Conclusion:
Creating awareness among users about the existence of biased information, instead of changing their behaviour with warning signs works better. pic.twitter.com/IENpalZ1cD— KNVI Juridische Informatie (@KNVI_JI) March 16, 2023

NT: If you give people dynamic feedback, the effectiveness of the profile updates improves.
It is easier to find content if the meta-data of certain media (text, photos) is well-curated. #voginip— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
NT: We are all biased. In an online search, we love to believe the first link that agrees with what we already believe. So if a certain link ends up high in an online search, this could influence what a reader thinks. How can we deal with this confirmation bias?#voginip
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
I understand now that we have to adapt personalisation on different people's needs because based on their internal model there's a difference on how they understand them. It's so simple yet it means we need to do more on the personalisation space than we do today #voginip
— Katariina Kari (@katsi111) March 16, 2023
NT: Autonomous systems should adapt to the user, and can be modeled. Things to take into account are e.g. expertise of the user, cognitive traits, and user feedback. As an example, thinks of music recommendations. https://t.co/ONCbbLgdGL#voginip pic.twitter.com/iOhj2CfOqY
— Elisabeth Bik is in the Netherlands (@MicrobiomDigest) March 16, 2023
NT: Recommendation systems are the tools that e.g. recommend what you should buy on Amazon, who you should follow on LinkedIn, or which article you might like. Sometimes those systems work better than other times. "We think you want to buy 10 more rubber ducks" 😅#voginip pic.twitter.com/6vlFfjgYOs
